After our last episode, where someone tried to say a whole medium could not be art, we try to talk around what art is then. I say talk around because art itself is too big and too amorphous to allow itself to be defined in many ways. That’s not going to stop us from talking about it though!
Notes and Stuff:
First let’s look at the Sistine Chapel ceiling. I have a hard time recalling any of the details of seeing this in person. The Wikipedia article linked here gives detailed pictures to see this stuff much more clearly than you can in person. So, while some people might be moved by seeing it in person, I was not. I am much more moved by seeing these images in close up detail in the privacy of my own home.
In contrast, when we went to the Croatian Museum of Naive Art (HMNU in Croatian), there was no one else in the gallery. We got to see the pieces up close and in our own time (a more normal gallery experience.) I was moved. I had never seen anything like some of these, and the images I can find online do not do them justice. The museum website is no longer offered in English, but some images are still viewable there. I also found the museum here. Which serves as a reminder that the circumstances, busy tourist site, versus empty gallery can have a huge impact on how a piece or collection connects with our deeper selves as a viewer. If the environment of exposure to the art lets you lose yourself in it rather than insists you stay focused on navigating a crowd the impact is just a wholly different experience.
Honeyshuckle’s art!

Three paintings Honeyshuckle had in galleries over the years, and an image of Honeyshuckle holding a canvas print of a digital piece she made. In case you didn’t know you, too can draw things on your computer and still put them on your wall. ๐ (works in background also by our Shuckle!)
